What to expect when selling or leasing an outdoor advertising hoarding

4 Mar 2025

Outdoor advertising is an increasingly popular way to capitalise on small areas of land and parts of buildings. Often these sites are several metres in length and height but just a few inches in width.

Whether you are interested in selling a small area of freehold land for the purpose of advertising or granting leasehold rights to hang an advertising hoarding on the wall of your existing property, there are several points to consider:

  • Rights of access over retained land to install, access, and maintain the billboard.
  • Rights to add electricity cables and to maintain or repair those cables required to power an electronic billboard.

Granting the above rights to an advertising company is straightforward and not burdensome for a landowner. These rights are clearly defined within the legal documents, and you can agree on details such as the location for access and electricity cables upfront to ensure the process is seamless.

Wildstone Comments: “Wildstone works closely with Cripps to ensure our leasehold and freehold expansion continues as efficiently as possible across the UK, allowing us to maximise the potential of advertising sites legally and securely.  With Cripps’ help, we aim to make the process of unlocking otherwise unutilised assets as smooth and transparent as possible, providing even-handed commercial solutions for Wildstone and our landlords alike.”
